Septoplasty

Tanım ve Amacı

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the nasal septum, the cartilage and bone structure that separates the two nostrils. A deviated septum can obstruct airflow, leading to breathing difficulties, nasal congestion, and other health issues. Septoplasty is performed to straighten the septum, improve breathing, and enhance the quality of life.

This condition can contribute to snoring, sleep apnea, chronic sinusitis, and nasal bleeding. Septoplasty is performed to correct these problems and improve the patient’s overall health and quality of life.

Prosedür

Septoplasty surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, and the procedure lasts between 2 to 3 hours. The steps of the procedure are as follows:

  1. Preparation: The patient’s expectations and nasal anatomy are evaluated before surgery. The surgical plan is customized according to the patient’s needs.

  2. Anesthesia: General anesthesia is administered.

  3. Incisions: Small incisions are made inside the nose to access the nasal septum. These incisions allow the surgeon to reach the septum and make necessary corrections. Additional incisions may be made if needed.

  4. Reshaping: The deviated septum is straightened, and excess cartilage and bone are removed if necessary. The septum is then repositioned and reshaped to improve airflow.

  5. Closure: The incisions are carefully closed, and supportive nasal splints are placed inside the nose. Dissolvable stitches are often used, which do not require removal.

İyileşme Süreci

The recovery period after septoplasty varies from person to person, but generally takes a few weeks. The recovery steps include:

  • First Week: Mild pain, swelling, and bruising are common. During this period, it is important to avoid any trauma to the nose, follow proper nasal hygiene, and adhere to the doctor’s instructions.

  • 2-3 Weeks: Most patients can return to their normal activities, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should still be avoided.

  • 3-6 Months: The nose continues to heal internally, and breathing improves progressively.
