Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Tanım ve Amacı

Otoplasty, medically known as ear surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to correct the shape, size, and position of the ears. It is often performed to fix deformities such as prominent ears (also known as “bat ears”) or other ear shape abnormalities that are either congenital or caused by trauma. The goal of otoplasty is to create a natural, symmetrical appearance that enhances facial harmony. This surgery is safe for both children and adults.

Otoplasty Applications

  • Prominent Ears (Bat Ears): Correcting ears that protrude more than normal.
  • Asymmetrical Ears: Balancing ears that differ in shape and size.
  • Ear Fold Defects: Correcting congenital or trauma-induced defects in ear folds.
  • Ear Size: Adjusting ears that are overly large or small to a more typical size.

Prosedür

Otoplasty is generally performed under local anesthesia or sedation, and the procedure takes 1-2 hours. The steps involved in the procedure are:

  1. Preparation: The surgeon evaluates the patient’s ear structure and plans the surgery tailored to the individual’s needs and anatomy.
  2. Anesthesia: Most patients receive local anesthesia, sometimes with sedation, but general anesthesia is also used, especially for children.
  3. Incisions: Incisions are typically made behind the ear, where they are hidden in the natural folds. The surgeon then reshapes the ear cartilage to achieve the desired shape and position.
  4. Reshaping: The cartilage is reshaped or removed as necessary, and any extra skin is trimmed. The ears are then secured in a more natural position closer to the head.
  5. Closure: The incisions are carefully closed, and a bandage is applied to support the ears during the healing process.

İyileşme Süreci

The recovery process after otoplasty is usually quick and uneventful. Most patients can go home the same day as the surgery.

  • First Week: Mild pain, swelling, and discomfort in the ears are normal. These symptoms generally subside within the first week. The head bandage may need to stay in place for a week to help support the new ear shape.
  • 2-3 Weeks: After the bandages are removed, swelling and bruising will significantly decrease. It’s important to avoid strenuous activities and protect the ears from injury during this time.
  • 1-2 Months: The ears will fully heal, and the final results will be visible. It is important to follow your surgeon’s instructions to ensure proper healing and the best outcome.

Is otoplasty surgery painful?

There is no pain felt during the surgery because of the anesthesia. Mild pain can be expected after the surgery, but this can usually be managed with painkillers.

Will there be scars after otoplasty?

The incisions made during otoplasty are usually hidden behind the ear, so scars are not visible. The scars will fade over time.

Is otoplasty surgery permanent?

Yes, the results of otoplasty are permanent. Once the ears are reshaped and positioned, they will remain in their new position.

What precautions should I take after otoplasty surgery?

It's important to avoid sleeping on your side, avoid physical activities that could cause injury to your ears, and follow your surgeon's instructions carefully to ensure proper healing.

When will I see the results of otoplasty?

The results of otoplasty are immediately visible once the bandages are removed, but final results will appear after the ears have fully healed.
