Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Tanım ve Amacı

Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin, muscle, and fat from the eyelids. This surgery can be applied to both the upper and lower eyelids to reduce sagging, puffiness, and wrinkles around the eyes, giving a younger and more dynamic appearance. Eyelid surgery can also be performed to resolve functional problems affecting vision caused by excess skin and aesthetic concerns.

Types of Eyelid Surgery

  1. Upper Eyelid Surgery (Upper Blepharoplasty): This procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid to create a tighter and more youthful appearance. If the sagging skin and fat obstruct the field of vision, this surgery also improves visual function.

  2. Lower Eyelid Surgery (Lower Blepharoplasty): This surgery aims to remove puffiness and wrinkles from the lower eyelid. During this procedure, excess fat and skin are repositioned or removed to create a smoother appearance.

Prosedür

Eyelid surgery is generally performed under local anesthesia or sedation. The surgery duration varies between 1-2 hours depending on whether the upper and/or lower eyelids are being operated on. In upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made along the natural crease of the eyelid, and excess skin, muscle, and fat are removed. In lower eyelid surgery, an incision is made just below the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid to remove or reposition fat and remove excess skin. The incisions heal well and become less noticeable over time.

İyileşme Süreci

The recovery process after eyelid surgery is generally quick:

  • First Week: Swelling, bruising, and mild pain may occur. These symptoms usually decrease within a week. Cold compresses and keeping the head elevated are recommended during the first few days.
  • 1-2 Weeks: Most patients return to work within a week after surgery. Stitches are usually removed within 5-7 days.
  • 3-4 Weeks: Swelling and bruising significantly diminish. The eye area gains a more natural and youthful appearance.
  • 3-6 Months: It may take several months for the incisions to fully heal and for the scars to fade significantly.

1. Is eyelid surgery painful?

During eyelid surgery, anesthesia is used so you won't feel any pain. Some mild pain may occur after the surgery, but this can usually be managed with painkillers.

2. Will there be scars after eyelid surgery?

Since the incisions are typically made in the natural creases of the eyelids, any scarring is usually well-hidden and fades over time.

3. Is eyelid surgery permanent?

Yes, eyelid surgery provides long-lasting results. However, the natural aging process will continue, and new wrinkles may eventually form.

4. Who is a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

Individuals who have excess skin or fat in the eyelids, leading to a tired appearance or affecting vision, may be good candidates for eyelid surgery.

5. What should I avoid after eyelid surgery?

Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activities, and direct sun exposure until fully healed. Following your surgeon's specific aftercare instructions is crucial.

6. When can I see the results after eyelid surgery?

The final results may take several weeks to a few months to fully emerge as swelling subsides and tissues settle.

7. Will eyelid surgery affect my vision?

Eyelid surgery is primarily aimed at improving the aesthetic appearance and may also help improve vision if excess skin is obstructing the field of vision.
